Match Result - Chorlton B vs Marple B - 22nd Feb 2011

DIV 3
Chorlton B RESULT Marple B
1 A All-Allak 0 1 Glenn Trueman
2 T Mackrell 0.5 0.5 Tony Doust
3 J Haines 0 1 Jeff Barlow
4 S Duffy 1 0 Peter Wilcox
5 P Forbes 0 1 Barrie Edwards

TOTALS 1.5 3.5

The B team managed to stem its losing streak with an excellent win at Chorlton last night, thanks, in no small measure, to Glenn for kindly agreeing to fill in for Peter Kelly. Glenn duly won his game on board 1 against an ungraded opponent, estimated at 30!. Barrie has been playing some uncharacteristically long games recently but last night he was back to his usual self. He surprised his opponent with his trademark B x f7 sacrifice, fully justified in this game and won in 11 moves. The rest of us had barely got started! Tony drew his match and Peter didn't despite being a piece up at one stage. So I had to get something to secure the win. My opponent played very aggressively, pushing pawns on both sides of the board without castling. To be honest I thought he would win the game and could have done so but let me off the hook through allowing exchanges. When it came to heavy pieces and pawns his advanced pawns and exposed king gave me enough chances so I could simplify to a winning endgame. I must admit to being nervous; it's a long time since I had a kings and single pawn ending in a league match. Anyway if I made any mistakes they weren't exploited and I got my queen and won.

Our next match is in a couple of weeks at home to Wilmslow B.

Re: Stockport Reds v Marple A Thu 17 Feb

Hi all,

Ah yes, Plan B didn't work for me! I played a different variation to the one I played earlier in the season against the same opponent to make him think of something other than f3 and his usual pawn storm, but I'm not convinced about the particular line that I chose. Although the position is considered equal (even by Fritz - 0.00) I'm not convinced that Black has sufficient counterplay and has to defend accurately throughout. This was largely proved correct when I knew the match score required a win for myself and George to salvage the 3-3 and tried to advance only to let my opponent in, although taking a hot pawn didn't help! I think I'll revert to my patented move order in future, at least I'll have a decent pawn structure which will please Philidor - Plan A!!

Defeat in a game that I thought we might do well in unfortunately.  Michael felt for an opening trick (that I fell for last year!) to lose an exchange early on and couldn't hold the resulting position.  I wasn't far behind.  I had a nice position but made the cardinal sin of moving a protected piece to an unprotected square.  This led to a combination that ultimately cost me a piece and the game.

So, 2-0 down after less than 90 minutes (and we weren't playing football).  Alex soon drew in a complex position in which he was probably better but was also short of time.  It would have been easy to lose.

Glenn generated an interesting position against his Spanish opponent which looked like it might have enough weaknesses for force a win but there wasn't so another draw and the score was 1-3.

George had a double edged game against Dave Pardoe and despite looking hair raising (to me) at times, it soon became apparent that he would win, which he duly did.

Which meant all rested on Terry, our star performer this year.  Unfortunately, his opponent always had the better position and to be fair finished it nicely in the end.

So four more league games to go.  We probably need a couple of wins to be absolutely safe - lets try for one of those in the next game, at Denton on Wednesday 2nd March!

Match Result - Urmston vs Marple B - 15th Feb 2011

Hi All,

A comprehensive defeat in the end, though all the matches were hard fought. Our opponents had a considerable grading advantage over us and they had strength and experience in depth, which told in the end. Well done Peter for the solitary win.

Chess Match Result - Marple B vs Ashton - 10th Feb 2011

Hi All,

DIV 3 Match Result

Marple B RESULT Ashton
1 Tony Doust 0 1 Philip Armstrong
2 Jeff Barlow 1 0 Tim Chatys
3 Peter Kelly 0.5 0.5 Daniel Bowden
4 Trefor Thomas 0 1 Edmund Jones
5 Peter Wilcox 0 1 Natalie Chatys

TOTALS 1.5 3.5

A pretty emphatic home defeat, I'm afraid. When we played Ashton away we won comfortably 4 - 1. The Ashton team comprises of 4 juniors on boards 2-5 and one of their trainers, Philip Armstrong (166) on board 1; so it was a bit of a suicide mission for Tony. The Ashton team played very well and were surprisingly good in the endgame, I fear we may have underestimated them.

Our next match is away to Urmston next Tuesday 15th February.

Chess Match Result - Marple B vs Macclesfield B- 20th Jan 2011

Hi All,

Apologies all, I have just realised that I failed to post this earlier though I did circulate it by email.

DIV 3 Match Result
Marple B RESULT Macclesfield B
1 Tony Doust 0 1 M Jouannet
2 Trefor Thomas 0 1 R Pommeroy
3 Peter Wilcox 0.5 0.5 A Sime
4 Barrie Edwards 0 1 R Murphy
5 Neil Dainty 1 0 T Robson

TOTALS 1.5 3.5

The B team suffered a mauling from a much strengthened Macclesfield B team, apart, of course, from Neil who continues his winning streak; well done, Neil. Peter Wilcox came from behind to secure a battling draw. We were heavily outgraded on the top four boards. The Macclesfield captain commented that Marple were still ahead on board count over the two legs so they were consciously trying to avenge the our 4 - 1 win at Macclesfield.
Our next match is at home to Ashton on February 10th.
